Drunk Driver Kills Bicyclist in Naples, Florida Auto Accident

Naples, Florida – A Naples woman was killed in an automobile accident when a drunk driver hit her late Monday night as she rode her bicycle along US-41, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The driver fled the scene.

The hit and run accident occurred just south of Imperial Golf Course Boulevard shortly after 11 pm.

An FHP spokesperson said Maria Alba Alvarez-Hernandez was riding southbound in the bicycle lane when she was struck by a pickup truck driven by 33-year-old Robert James Bacon of Naples.

The impact threw Alvarez-Hernandez onto the sidewalk. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say Bacon took off after the crash, but he was later arrested and is in custody at the Collier County Jail.

Bacon has been charged with the following crimes:
– DUI manslaughter – Two counts of DUI property damage; and,
– leaving the scene of a crash involving a death.

Drunk drivers are responsible for far too many injuries and deaths on Florida’s roads, but the drunk driver is not always the only one to blame. Irresponsible corporations that put profits over people are also very often responsible for these horrible accidents. When bartenders, waiters and waitresses continue to serve alcohol to a patron even though he or she is obviously intoxicated, bad things happen.

Tragedies will continue to happen as long as people drink and drive, but the number of alcohol related accidents can be drastically reduced if restaurant and bar owners adopt and enforce strong policies against serving alcohol to visibly intoxicated customers.

The Florida accident lawyers at our firm work hard to hold corporate wrongdoers accountable for the harm they cause.
